Victoria starts working on a skatepark and a cycle path

VICTORIA – Prepare to move to Victoria.

Construction has started on the new skate and bike facilities for Topaz Park.

Concept designs for the new amenities were developed through extensive community engagement, including input from the skate and biking community, and were approved by council in August.

“The start of construction is an exciting step towards bringing these world-class park amenities to this neighborhood,” Hillside-Quadra Neighborhood Liaison Councilor Ben Isitt said in a statement. “Parks like this build healthy communities and this project will provide an active community hub for the neighborhood and attract cyclists of all skill levels across the region.” “

The parks along with the replacement of an artificial turf sports field are part of an initial investment of $ 8 million in improvements guided by the Topaz Park Improvement Plan, adopted in 2018.

“After many months of planning and consultation with representatives of the cycling and skateboarding communities, the project team is delighted to begin construction of this new park equipment,” said Thomas Soullière, Director of parks, recreation and facilities.

Additions include a skatepark with features and terrain for tricks, an asphalt bike pump track designed for a range of skill levels, integrated shared trails and social spaces, and a sustainable approach to water management. rain.

The city also worked with artist Germaine Koh to incorporate their work into the design. The artwork designs include a series of interactive sculptures inspired by native plants that celebrate the energy flows around the site from human movement, natural forces and urban systems. Public toilets and parking near Topaz Avenue and Blanshard Street are closed for the duration of the work. Public toilets and parking are available on the east side of the park, off Glasgow Street. The new skateparks and bike parks should be open in summer 2022.
