Summer fun and outdoor family fun without leaving town at Beacon Park – CW50 Detroit

Southfield (CW50) – Almost five years after its opening, the 1.2-acre Beacon Park in downtown Detroit has become a city staple for families residing downtown, as well as those traveling to Detroit for the day. With light fixtures, an open lawn, and even a two-story restaurant connected to it, Beacon Park has dedicated its space to various events, activities, markets, and shows.

After closing the space to activities in 2020, Beacon Park is making a strong comeback with its summer activities. From volleyball leagues, workouts and yoga to family fun days and night markets, Beacon Park has been a busy summer for people of all ages.

Megan Heeres, Director of Beacon Park, joins Lisa Germani on Community Connect to talk about what’s happening downtown at Beacon Park and how it’s the perfect place for people who don’t want to leave town for be active outdoors.

Below is a list of summer activities organized throughout the season at Beacon Park in Detroit:

Volleyball Leagues with Come Play Detroit
Tuesdays, Wednesdays: May 25 – Sept. 1

Games 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.

Volleyball leagues are back in Beacon Park! Only players feeling good should attend. All players will have their temperature taken on arrival with a non-contact thermometer, hand sanitizer will be available on all courts / fields, volleyballs will be sanitized between matches and players must wear a mask. Get back in shape after dark
Thursday: May 27, June 24, July 22 and August 26

8 p.m. – 10 p.m.

Join Beacon Park Detroit and Coach Kiwi for the summer series; Fitness After Dark – KICKABS with Coach Kiwi. The event includes 60 minutes of intense cardio kickboxing and abdominal work in the dark and will include a pre-party warm-up, strobe lights and live music from DJ Steel. Participants can attend in person or virtually, and the event is free and open to all ages. Seating in person is limited, participants must register in advance to attend. Free light packs will be available to attendees while supplies last. VIP light packs are available for a limited time.

Rise and Grind training

Saturday: June 5 and June 19

7 a.m. – 8 a.m.

The Summer Saturdays at Beacon Park, Rise and Grind Workout – KICKABS with Coach Kiwi series includes 60 minutes of intense cardio kickboxing and sit-up workouts. The event is available in person or virtually and is free to anyone, of all ages. In-person participants must register in advance. Participants must bring a bottle of water and a yoga mat, as well as a suggested donation to participate.

City Shine Yoga

June 7 and 21, July 5 and 19, August 2, 16 and 30, September 13 (every two weeks)

7:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.

City Glow Yoga ™ returns to Beacon Park this spring and summer for a socially aloof version of its city-inspired yoga program, including immersive outdoor yoga sessions using silent disco technology. Via headphones, participants will be immersed in music, creating the perfect atmosphere to discover the city and their inner being. There is a suggested donation of $ 5 to participate. Please bring a yoga mat and a bottle of water. Places are limited, so reservations are required.

Yoga baby + me

Tuesdays: June 22 – August 31

10 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Baby and Me yoga classes at Beacon Park are a great way for parents to meet, bond, and have a special time with their babies, while enjoying the benefits of yoga. Classes are designed for parents with infants / toddlers who cannot walk (0-18 months). No previous yoga experience is necessary. Participants should wear comfortable clothing, bring a yoga mat, and have a blanket handy if needed. This course is free and open to the public. Registration required.

Mama Meet Ups with Detroit Mama Hub

Tuesdays: June 22, July 6 and 20, August 3, 17 and 31

11 a.m. – 12 p.m. (every two weeks)

Join us at Beacon Park for our upcoming Mamas Circles, a relaxed space where attendees can make new friends, exchange tips, ask questions, and just let off steam with other moms. This course is free and open to the public. Registration required.

Family fun days

Sundays: June 6 – August 29,

1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Beacon Park is the perfect place for family fun this summer. enjoy make + take activities, lawn games and crafts! Each week will feature unique themes including field activities, music, art and live shows, and even a back-to-school party. Participants can also refuel the local food trucks or grab a bite to eat at Beacon Park’s flagship restaurant, Lumen Detroit. The themes of the event are below and are subject to change.

Night market

Saturdays: July 5 – August 28 (no event on July 3)

6 p.m. – 11 p.m.

The night market at Beacon Park Detroit returns this summer with new local vendors and Detroit’s best bands and DJs. Every Saturday from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., attendees can shop locally and support Detroit-based vendors showcasing handmade jewelry, t-shirts and more and enjoy food and drink from Lumen Detroit and food trucks. Entrance and activities are free and open to everyone. Interested sellers can apply here.
