City of Greenville Opens New Facilities at Wildwood Park

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) – Members of the Greenville community turned out Thursday for the groundbreaking ceremony at Wildwood Park for a new visitor center and playground.

The expansion comes nearly a year after the park opened in October 2021, but Greenville Recreation and Parks Director Don Octigan says he’s excited about the community as development has been underway for some time. .

“A lot of exciting stuff here in Wildwood, the vision started years ago,” Octigan said. “Now our goal is really to move forward and expand it and just offer different activities to the community.”

In addition to these additions, the facility also brings the first-ever mountain bike trail, a bike skills course, and a paved pump track to Greenville.

Despite all these fun activities, there is one thing park goers want the most, a restroom.

“We’re creating a restroom facility, which is probably the number one request for us right now and what our current park users want to see,” Octigan said. “Also, the facility will allow us to rent the park more, rent the shelter, which will allow the community to have more events here.”

The new expansion is part of phase two of the park’s development, which was designed earlier this year and funded by the city council.

Greenville Parks planner Mark Nottingham says the city’s support means a lot because without him the project might not have been possible.

“Our county is very pleased with the City Council’s continued support to continue funding the park to provide amenities such as the visitor center and play area,” Nottingham said. “Keep the momentum on the park, lots of community support.”

The new visitor center, playground and other amenities will open in summer 2023.
