Christmas in the park successful holiday event | News, Sports, Jobs
STEUBENVILLE – While the next event being held at Beatty Park in the South End of Steubenville at 621 Lincoln Ave. will only take place next month, Flora VerStraten-Merrin is still relishing the event that was held there last month.
Christmas in the Park, which took place on Dec. 4, was a big success with family-friendly activities enjoyed by all attendees, according to VerStraten-Merrin of the Beatty Park Friends Revitalization Group who hosted the event.
Christmas in the Park featured a living nativity scene (with real animals); Christmas music live by Sycamore Youth Choir, singer Darlene Van Dyke-Sofronski and Friends community choir; the Beatty Park float that had been part of the Steubenville Christmas parade earlier in the day; Mr Santa and Mrs Claus and assistants who were on hand for photos with children and / or pets with dog treats and childrens treats and the ability to write a letter to Santa Claus; children’s crafts; and a walk / hike.
The Old Stone Lodge was decked out in all of its Victorian glory and was the place of storytelling. VerStraten-Merrin thanked John Boileigh and Paul Zuros, Executive Director of Historic Fort Steuben, for sharing some local historical stories.
“I had fun portraying my great-great-grandmother Harriet Atkinson Barrett, who married John Barrett, and they lived right next to the park in 1880,” she noted.
“Every month of planning and work many volunteers have been appreciated, appreciated and loved by our community”, commented VerStraten-Merrin. “I am grateful to all the volunteers who donated not only their time, but also their talents and possessions. “
“The attendance – hundreds – and the distances traveled from Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio, far and near, to enjoy the event are proof of the desire and need to provide such events. “, she added.
No special activities at the park are scheduled for January, but a winter hike is scheduled for February 26, starting at noon.
