Children delighted to be sprayed at the new La Porte paddling pool

Just in time for July temperatures of over 100 degrees, the city of La Porte has opened a new wading pool at Monarch Park.

Attracting a small army of happy kids when it opens July 7, the 2,000-square-foot facility is part of the overall neighborhood park renovation at 9801 Rustic Gate Road, which is in the Fairmont Park West residential community. The city replaced the park’s old playground with a new one and replaced a swimming pool with a wading pool.

The playground features play structures that showcase the park’s monarch butterfly theme, such as caterpillar-shaped play equipment. The wading pool and playground are the first phase of the comprehensive renovation of Monarch Park, newly named to match the city’s concept theme for the facility, said Tim Miller, director of parks and recreation.

Over the next few months, once the final touches to park amenities are complete, including a fence that will surround the playground and wading pool for added security, the city will begin developing a butterfly crossing station, in installing a pollinator garden that will create an ecosystem to attract migrating monarchs.
