Carthage’s new park for all ages offers everyone a place to play

CARTHAGE, Texas (KLTV) – The city of Carthage officially opened its new playground for all skill levels and ages with a groundbreaking ceremony Monday morning.

The new College View Park on Bird Drive is a place where no matter what the world says you can or can’t do. The park is designed to give everyone the opportunity to have fun.

“There’s something for everyone here,” said Jessica Pace, vice president of institutional advancement at Panola College. Panola College’s Occupational Therapy Assistant program worked with the city on the new playground.

Among the first people to try out the new playground were Paige Gates and her six-year-old son Lyric of Logansport, Louisiana.

“Lyric has special needs,” she told us. “And my goal in his life is to make sure that the world sees him, not necessarily that he sees the world, but the world sees it. And knows that there are all kinds of people in life and they do things in different ways, but they’re having fun anyway. “

And it looks like Lyric and his mom found this great time in the new playground, where Lyric got to enjoy accessible amenities alongside other kids.

“I’m glad to see that there are things he can do here without a lot of work,” said Paige Gates.

Those who helped build the park said the goal is also to motivate parents not to just sit on a bench while their children play, but to give them the opportunity to play with them.

“One of my favorites is called an expression swing,” Pace said. “This is where two people can swing together at the same time. It’s a park where you play with them.

A park and a playground built on seven principles: being fair, inclusive, intelligent, independent, safe, active and comfortable.

“It makes my heart happy,” said Paige Gates. “It just makes my heart happy to see him do things.”

If you want to visit the new College View Park, it is located next to Bird Drive in Carthage, opposite the Merle Glass Building at Panola College.
